SEO can be extremely important if you have a website. If you don't have a website and your business today then you might think about obtaining one. But one of the most common problems I see today regarding SEO is that most website designers don't really know enough about SEO. 50% of SEO is built into your website and %50 is what we call off site SEO. The problem should be obvious if your website designer isn't an SEO expert that you have a problem right from the start. What I recommend is that you have a real SEO expert consult with any website designer before building a website. Then half your battle is won before you ever get started. A domain is like a piece of property, and a website is like a building on that propert. But until you have a sign and marketing in place, no one will know anything about your business. SEO is the first stage in getting traffic to your website. It is like a voting system for the public or something akin to word of mouth in the real world. Without it SEO your website is not going to rank in Google, or Bing. Although websites don't have to rely on SEO traffic methods for every business model, it still is one of the most common ways to get your website in the top of the search engines. Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Youtube, mobile marketing can all be used to replace traffic for a website, but without consulting with an internet marketing expert you will never know for sure.
